Hello from our Russian language school Enjoy Russian! We got plenty of news last week! Here they are! First of all we said goodbye to Silvia and Claes, they left us on Friday. We miss them both very much as it was great fun for us to get to know these people. It was so nice to see Claes trying his best to learn Russian!!! And we’ll always remember Silvia as a life and the soul of the company.

But still there are 3 more students here; Ashley, David and Marisa made friends very fast and spend a lot of time together.
Last week they went to the party called Russian Thursday in one of Petrozavodsk night clubs. At the weekend they were skiing, skating and snowboarding in an open air entertaining complex. We believe that was great!
Ashley visited a day care and spent her time with small children who only started learning English. It seems to be rather challenging for her.

And today we are waiting for one more student from Finland - Anni! Anni is gouing to take 2 week Russian language course at Enjoy Russian and the next 3 weeks she will be a volunteer at the charitable foundation working with children.

Last week was not very easy for Panaiotis, our teacher form Great Britain, as he started teaching English. He is very popular here and plenty of people wish to study in his groups.
This week we have a very exciting event this Thursday – Great Britain, Great Love – devoted to St. Valentine’s Day. Panaiotis and Ashley will be the main persons on it!

Hello from
Russia! It seems that it’s getting warmer! And that is good news for our Russian language school’s foreign guests. From now on they may spend more time walking around the town and entertaining themselves with winter outdoor activities. By the way, they have a great chance to guide Panayiotis around Petrozavodsk, he is a young teacher from Great Britain. He will stay with us till the end of April. Just imagine what a pleasure it is for all of us to communicate with him! He’s very nice and is committed to his work. We have already had the opportunity to know each other better; last week we watched a film together and even went to a night club! Soon we are planning to organize a party called Great Britain, Great Love and invite all comers. We will be dancing, talking English and Russian, making St.Valentine cards and even taking part in a romantic photo session.
Today two more students have joined us, David from
Germany and Marisa from Switzerland. After their Russian classes the guys will have the excursion around Ptz and tomorrow our students-volunteers will prepare an interesting presentation about Russia and Karelia. And we are waiting for Anni from Finland
to visit our Russian language school and improve her Russian. We anticipate the moment we’ll be able to know each other and make new friends.

Are you going to Russia for the first time? Read this article!

So you have decided to visit our wonderful and unique northern country! Congratulations! We are 100% sure you’ll spend here the time of your live, find new interesting people, see unbelievably beautiful places!

But nevertheless you should remember that you are going to an absolutely different country with its laws, rules and traditions. Don’t panic, just read the article and get prepared for new impressions.

Those who have no idea about Russia  usually are very surprised and even taken aback by what is not like at their homes.  That’s why foreigners should remember many important things. So this article is your guide to Russia.

Of course one of the most sufficient moments is the weather. The weather in Russia may be very different. It depends on the region of your destination. In winter it may be very cold, about -35 (so welcome to the famous Russian winter!); it is impossible to come without a warm sweater, a jacket or a coat. A hat and gloves are also required.

As for summer time, you should take a swimsuit and sunglasses, because, for example, in July it may be very hot (+30). Besides take some kind of a cap to prevent sunstroke. But such extremes are not common. For the last several years winters haven’t been so severe and in summer it may be cool and rainy, especially in the evening, so don’t forget about some shirt with long sleeves or a light jacket. And one more important aspect connected with summer is flies, mosquitoes and midges. It is really a big problem. So if you don’t want to have your evening on the fresh air spoiled purchase insecticides. It’s not a problem at all to do that right in the place – your hosts will definitely help you.

In spring and autumn the weather may be very rainy, windy and wet especially in March, April and October. So think about good shoes and, of course take an umbrella. Coming to Russia at these seasons may bring you a lot of positive impressions as well. For instance, in the end of September there is usually a season called Babje leto that brings back the summer heat again; several weeks it’s sunny, warm and dry, at the same time trees are already covered with gold, red and orange coloured leaves - Golden autumn has come! In the end of April and May you’ll see trees getting covered with young, tiny, light green leaves. Everything around starts looking summerlike.

We suppose that everybody knows that medical kit is your friend in any travelling. You must know that the food in every country is specific, and it may be heavy for your stomach at first till it won’t get used.
Moreover different pills are also needed just in case, because the weather in Russia may change unpredictably and quickly and influence your wellbeing. Take care of yourself and think thoroughly about medicines you may need.

Take a credit card (Visa or Master cards are ok) and some cash with you. You may easily get rubles from ATM. In Russia credit cards are seldom used in shops and restaurants, be ready for that! There are plenty of small shops and cafes that won’t be able to receive your card, they are mostly used in big trade centres, malls, restaurants. The point is that Russian infrastructure is not as developed as in Europe or the USA so you will mostly need cash.

Do not forget that on the territory of Russia you can’t pay for your purchases with euros or dollars. Only rubles are used. You can easily exchange currency in any bank. We do not advice you to do that in the streets as it’s also possible (everything is legal but the course is a bit higher and the bank percents are not payed); this way you may be misled.

It is very important to know that it is dangerous to drink water just from taps. It’s dirty. Many foreigners don’t know about that, because in the European countries it is possible to drink such water, it’s mostly specially purified. In Russia don’t take such a risk and don’t drink it! You’d better boil it, clear through filters or just buy drinking water in any shop.

And  some more aspects you should be aware of. According to the law it’s forbidden to drink alcohol in public places. But  you’ll see crowds of young people walking down the streets or sitting in parks with a bottle of bier or whatever. Such peculiarity shouldn’t amaze you. Our advice is NOT to follow this example. The same thing is with speeding up. Follow the rules and don’t look at the cars rushing down the streets with the unbelievable speed. Cross the street only in the specially equipped places such as conjunctions with the traffic lights or zebra crossings.  Foreigners are penaltied for breaking the law more frequently and harsher since they don’t speak the language and don’t know the particularities of the local law. And please, keep your things safe.

Of course it is not the whole list of very significant things that you should know, but every foreigner should remember them by heart to feel comfortable and safe in Russia.

Russians are very cheerful and hospitable. Our hospitality is our national trait. We are always ready for communication and long-lasting friendship. Your host-family will be glad to provide a convenient accommodation and do their best to make you feel at home. They will definitely be pleased to find out more about you, your family, your country and people. So don’t forget your photo album and your national souvenirs. Don’t forget a camera; there are lots of unique and beautiful places to go sightseeing! Try to purchase our national souvenirs as well to share impressions with you nearest and dearest back home.

Welcome to Russia!!

Lots of people are waiting for it buying presents for their nearest and dearest, looking for some new recipes of tasty dishes… The are some traditional things which are made in most Russian families. It is the last week Tim is in Petrozavodsk, at Russian language school Enjoy Russian. We will miss him very much.

Not only volunteers and staff of Center Initiative are sure that Tim is a friendly and very communicative young man, this can also confirm young people from Ptz. Last Thursday they had an opportunity to meet him at measure, which was called “Holland: Land of free tulips” where Tim has taken an active part.

People from Petrozavodsk saw a presentation about the Netherlands and learn how to pronounce some words in this beautiful language. Then everybody play an interesting game: Tim was reading a text in the Dutch language and Russian people should recognize 12 words which came to Russian language from Holland. Nobody can find all these words ;)!

Tim told us that in the Netherlands people often each sweet hamburgers (with chocolate and son on) and we tried to make such hamburgers too. At the end of measure “Holland: Land of free tulips” the best hamburger’s maker have got a price - real Holland sausage!

And today there is a traditional evaluation part of our program – National Food Party!

Today is Monday, the snow is everywhere! But is fine for our guest Kevin and Daniela. Kevin from Ireland has already stayed in Russia for a week. One more week is waiting for him. And these 7 days seem to be full of activities and emotions. He will go to the theatre, take part in the National Food Party, have a long walk-trip around Ptz taking pictures and enjoying the beginning of winter. Besides Kevin can feel the atmosphere of one of the most popular games in Russia and Petrozavodsk too. It is some kind of Comedy club – The club of funny and smart (KVN), which is held in Petrozavodsk State University. So he has an opportunity to appreciate sense of humor of Russian students. Moreover two of our volunteers Ksusha and Masha will also appear on the stage this evening ;)
By the way it is the last week for Daniela’s staying in Russia. This trip was a real challenge for her, but she has done it!!! Russian language course and her work as a volunteer are over. So the review of her volunteer’s activity you can see here http://enjoyrussian.com/3661/8414/.

Last week our Center “Initiative” organized 2 arrangements.

The first one “Осень.fi” was open for all people from Petrozavodsk. During this meeting Russian youth had a possibility to know more about our neighbor country Finland, to take nice pictures, to dance polish polka and to speak Finnish during language master-class Enjoy Finnish! Now we feel that Suomi is even closer than we suppose!

The second arrangement was called “Swiss chocolate in Russian paper-cover”. It was organized special for children interesting in German.

Our student Daniela (at the moment she is volunteering with children) prepared an interesting program for Russian curious children! We would like to thank Daniela for this funny Sunday’s day!

At the weekend the students as usual had a rich outdoor program. First of all on Saturday they visited the local night club FM. There we danced, enjoyed Russian modern music and had a lot of fun: the guys met some more volunteers of the centre Initiative and just youth people from Petrozavodsk.
The next thing to do was to visit open-air museum Kizhi and on Sunday the students of Russian Language School Enjoy Russian went there to see that well-known place with their own eyes.
Though the guys were a bit tired after yesterday’s visit of the night club :) everyone liked Kizhi Island very much and had a wonderful time there taking pictures, enjoying unforgettable nature and observing wooden churches and chapels. The weather was also wonderful and sunny all day long, so we didn’t have to worry about umbrellas :) Hope the summer won’t leave Karelia in the nearest future!

July 29th, 2009

This weekend seemed to be very sunny and warm, so the volunteers organized a picnic for our guests. We went to the beach and had fun there playing volleyball, singing Russian songs and speaking Russian a lot. The students got acquainted with some new volunteers they haven’t met before. One of the volunteers Andrey played the guitar and the guys liked the song “Alie Parusa”, which means “Red Sails” most of all. But suddenly it started raining! Nevertheless we have had a great time together at the picnic.

And today students from Enjoy Russian language school are going for rafting! We suppose that this will be a great adventure for them…
